I remember that slogan, "Reading Is FUNdamental", from my elementary school days. Since that time, I've developed into an avid, seasoned reader, which is another reason to enjoy the Silver Lake neighborhood. It's 2.7 miles south of the Patience S. Latting Northwest Library. The architecture for the library itself is pleasing, comfortable, open, light-filled, and almost Frank Lloyd Wright-esque in its design and the way it fits into the land around it. It's one of those buildings you'd like to live in and it has a strong Oklahoma flavor. Besides it being a pleasant place to read or study, it also, like all of the OKC metro libraries, offers a full range of services. Visit the link below for a description from the library website about the building and all it has to offer. The Northwest Library is another reason why Silver Lake is a place where you'd love to live.

It's time to restock your pantry. Where do you like to buy your groceries? Well, if you live in Silver Lake, you have a lot of good choices within close driving distance: Sprouts Farmers Market is 2.4 miles away, Homeland is 3.3 miles, Walmart Neighborhood Market 2.4 miles, Crest Foods 2.4 miles, Braum's Fresh Market 2.2 miles, ALDI is 1.7 miles away and Target is 1.9 miles. By the way, I informally polled a few neighbors about which of these supermarkets was their favorite, and Crest Foods and Sprouts Farmers Market were at the top of the list.

If you love a good walk, jog, run, or bicycle ride, then you will like Silver Lake, not only for its scenic routes but also for its access to the multi-use Lake Hefner trail, also known as the Bert Cooper Trail. The trail, less than half a mile away from the Silver Lake neighborhood, encircles the lake for a 9.6 mile (15.4 km) paved course with great water views, not to mention access to parks, fishing, a yacht club, restaurants, and a golf course. This is just one more reason to make Silver Lake the neighborhood where you love to live.

Rafts of ducks, gaggles of geese, sieges of herons, congregations of egrets, passels of possums, surfeits of skunks, scurries of squirrels and skulks of foxes, plus a plethora of many more groups of critters fly, skedaddle and swim in the Silver Lake neighborhood, which, for the nature lover, is pure delight. One can almost feel like Henry David Thoreau (think "Walden") or Annie Dillard (think "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek") living in Silver Lake.

There is no more convenient restaurant to Silver Lake than Sunnyside Diner, located at 9148 N MacArthur Blvd, with it being just a few hundred feet or so from the neighborhood. Not only is it convenient, the food and service there are outstanding. Plus, they've just improved their outdoor dining availability. It's just one of those places where the whole experience makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.

My personal favorite item on the menu is the "Croque Madame". That is, and my mouth is watering just thinking of it, ham and swiss on toasted brioche, topped with béchamel and two sunnyside eggs. Now, I don't even know what béchamel is, but it's yummy. Sunnyside Diner is just one more reason to love where you live.

My wife and I moved to Silver Lake one year ago, and one reason we did is it feels like living at a lake. The moment you turn off MacArthur or Britton into the neighborhood the first thing you notice is narrow, winding roads lined on both sides with trees. In fact, you have to pull over if a car is driving in the opposite direction.

It's unlike the typical OKC neighborhood in the way it looks and feels, and yet it's convenient: 0.7 miles to Lake Hefner and its trails; 2.4 miles to Sprouts Farmers Market; 2.7 miles to Northwest Library; 4.7 miles to Mercy Hospital; 3.6 miles to the Kilpatrick Turnpike, and 1.8 miles to Northwest Expressway. So, if you like lake-living with modern conveniences, find a house to buy that's right for you in Silver Lake. Remember, love where you live!
