  • Queenies is a coffee shop located in Utica Square on E. 21st Street in midtown Tulsa. This famous midtown eatery was named after Queenie, a pet cow owned by Ruth Young, who owned and operated Queenies for forty some-odd years. Starting out on Brookside, Queenies later moved to Utica Square In 2019 Brian Hughes bought Queenies and moved it to its new location across the street from the parking garage and the Emergency Room at Ascension St. John Medical Center. Now hospital visitors have a convenient place to eat in close proximity to the medical center. The food at Queenies is delicious and the service is excellent.
  • This week marks the 95th anniversary of St. John Medical Center in midtown Tulsa. The Congregation of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother opened the hospital's doors on Valentine's Day in 1925. Dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, it is located across the street from Utica Square (which wasn't built until the 1950s.) Most native Tulsans will tell you they were born here.

Sister M. Therese Gottschalk ran the hospital for 38 years, overseeing major expansion projects. In 2014 she presented the entire St. John Hospital system to Ascension, bringing them the crown jewel in their nationwide consortium of Roman Catholic hospitals. Since then, many changes have occurred and major Ascension branding became visible in 2020 after Sister Therese's retirement and death.
